Children's podiatry

Specific protocols for diagnosing problems of the foot and of walking in children, while there is still time to correct them.

A child’s foot is not a small adult foot. It changes shape year by year, and most of what will shape it for life happens before the age of twelve — which is precisely why a problem caught early is often a problem solved.

Parents usually notice something rather than measure it: a child who trips more than the others, who walks with the feet turned in or out, who wears one shoe down faster than the other, or who says their legs ache after playing.

Growing pains are worth mentioning to a podiatrist. Sometimes that is exactly what they are; sometimes they are the first sign of something that is easy to correct now and hard to correct later.

What we look at

The assessment is adapted to the child’s age: how the foot is formed, how the arch behaves when standing and walking, whether the legs rotate, and whether both sides are doing the same thing. Where treatment is needed it is often exercises and advice on footwear; where custom orthotics help, they are made to the child’s own foot and reviewed as it grows.
